On the night that the Winnipeg Jets picked up their first playoff win in Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise history, the Peguis Juniors made some history of their own.
Although unable to draw a crowd quite as large as the one gathered at Winnipeg’s Bell MTS Place, the Juniors put on a show in front of their own home crowd, picking up the Baldy Northcott Trophy for the third-straight KJHL season.
Finding themselves down 3-0 just midway through the opening frame, the Juniors battled back with four unanswered goals, beginning with a shorthanded marker late in the first period. Christian Cochrane picked up Peguis’ third and fourth goals, while Keeven Daniels-Webb collected a goal and an assist in the series-clinching victory.
St. Malo – who finished the regular season in sixth place – has nothing to be ashamed of, after knocking off both the third place OCN Storm in the quarterfinals, and first place Selkirk Fishermen in the semifinals, before ultimately dropping the championship to Peguis.
As league champs and runners up, the Juniors and Warriors will now head off to Thunder Bay for the 2018 Battle of the Border from April 19th-22nd.
