If you can’t beat them on the scoreboard, beat them with your fists. General Manager Lou Lamoriello and the New York Islanders have shown that’s the way they will go in 2018-19; GM Jeff Gorton and the New York Rangers have taken notes.

Binscarth’s Cody McLeod Signs With New York

After coming to New York from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Lamoriello has re-shaped his squad by signing grinder Leo Komarov and trading for enforcer Matt Martin, who will find themselves serving in a 2018-19 lineup already consisting of tough guys Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck.

If the New York Islanders are toughening up, that must mean the Rangers followed suit, correct? Correct. It was announced last week that Cody McLeod agreed to a one-year deal to stay on Broadway.

After spending the first ten years of his NHL career throwing hands in Colorado, McLeod was dealt to the Nashville Predators in time for their prolific 2016-17 playoff run that ended a few games short of the Stanley Cup. The 34-year-old fighter was placed on Waivers in late January, and the Rangers took a chance on the 6-foot-2, 215-pound winger.

In 48 games split between Nashville and New York, McLeod collected one goal, four points and 111 penalty minutes. That stat-line was good enough for a one-year, $750K deal, lasting the Binscarth, MB. native all of the coming season. He will look to bring his tough and gritty Manitoba-styled game to the lineup whenever called upon.
