On Wednesday it was formally announced that Belleville, ON. native Sean Fisher will take over head coaching duties for the 2018-19 season in an interim position, as longtime head coach Jon Rempel begins his sabbatical. Notice the word ‘fresh’, not ‘new’. Fisher is no stranger to the Bisons’ program – having spent the past four years as one of Rempel’s assistants within the team.
For those closely associated with the University of Manitoba and the women’s hockey program, Wednesday’s news should not come as a surprise. After leading the Bisons to their third Canada West championship and the very first national championship in program history in 2017-18, it was determined that Rempel – who has spent the past 14 seasons with the team – would take a six-month period of professional development, while one of his assistants took over the head coaching duties for the 2018-19 season.
Fisher, who has specialized in video work and special teams play as a coach with the University of Manitoba, is no stranger to the hockey community. He has been involved in a vast number of ways since beginning coaching with the Sudbury Wolves AAA bantams in Ontario.
Since moving to Manitoba, Fisher has spent time coaching young women at Shaftesbury High School and the midget AAA Winnipeg East Saints. He also previously served as the Head of Athlete Development at Canlan Ice Sports in Winnipeg, as well as the Director of Hockey Operations for the Boston Shamrocks of the Junior Women’s Hockey League.
The Bisons kick off their 2018-19 preseason schedule on Friday, September 7th with a set of games against St. Mary’s Prep squad, before rounding out the rest of their exhibition schedule by late September. The regular season begins on October 5th, as the Herd plays host to the University of Calgary Dinos in a two-game set from Wayne Fleming Arena.
