Steinbach’s Darby Gula Commits to Bemidji State

After three seasons of Manitoba Junior Hockey League play for his hometown Steinbach Pistons, defenceman Darby Gula has committed to spend the 2018-19 hockey season at Bemidji State, for the university’s Beavers hockey program.

Gula – a 20-year-old blueliner put together three solid seasons of MJHL play, putting up his best numbers during the Pistons’ historic run to the RBC Cup this past year. The offensive-minded defenceman collected 14 goals and 61 points in 56 games for Steinbach in 2017-18, finishing third on his team for points, while pacing all MJHL defenceman in scoring.

In 16 MJHL postseason games, Gula collected one goal and nine points en route to the league championship, before putting up two goals and six total points in six games in the Anavet Cup against the Nipawin Hawks.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound former Eastman Select now joins Tyler Kirkup, Tyler Jubenvill and Justin Baudry as the fourth Manitoban on the Bemidji State roster, a team looking to improve upon its 28-13-9-9 record from 2017-18. The Beavers finished fourth place within the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
