Previously operating under the league name City Midget AAA, Winnipeg’s AAA Midget league will now be called U-17 AAA Midget Prep. This change is significant as the focus of the AAA league now shifts to 15 and 16-year-old players, as opposed to the older aged 17-year-olds.
Now considered a ‘feeder league’, the U-17 AAA Midget Prep league will feature seven teams, including a new team competing from Brandon, MB., on top of the Winnipeg Sharks, Warriors, Hawks and Monarchs, Interlake Lightning and Eastman Selects.
Although also based out of Winnipeg, the U-17 AAA Midget Prep league should not be confused for the travelling Provincial Midget AAA league, that hosts 13 teams, including the Winnipeg Thrashers, Wild and Bruins, as well as the Brandon Wheat Kings, Eastman Selects, Central Plains Capitals, Interlake Lightning, Kenora Thistles, Norman Northstars, Parkland Rangers, Pembina Valley Hawks, Southwest Cougars, and the Yellowhead Chiefs.
The Winnipeg Monarchs collected the City Midget AAA championship in the 2017-18 season, and will look to defend their crown in the newly coined U-17 AAA Midget Prep league this coming season. Conditioning camps run from August 25th to 30th, with tryouts to follow shortly thereafter.
