The 15-year-old product of the Southwest Cougars AAA program was selected by Portland 121st overall in the sixth round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.
“Tyson plays with good speed and tempo,” said Mike Johnston, Winterhawks’ General Manager and Head Coach “And he proved that he can play in this league by having a very good training camp.”
Over the past three seasons with Southwest, Kozak has collected 49 goals, 116 points and 56 penalty minutes in 113 games for the Cougar Bantams and Midgets. In the 2017-18 season, the 5-foot-10 centreman put up 10 goals and 35 points while playing out of the Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League.
After being named by The Hockey News Magazine as the WHL’s number one franchise heading into the 2017-18 season, the Winterhawks failed to live up to the hype, finishing second in the U.S. Division with a record of 44-22-6. This year’s team will look to improve upon its second round playoff falter from the 2018 postseason.
