Winnipeg Jets Announce Three Cuts

Defencemen Leon Gawanke, Declan Chisholm and Giovanni Vallati have each been sent back to the CHL following a brief stay with the big league team. Neither of the three blueliners drew into the Jets’ lineup for the first preseason game on Monday.

Gawanke, 19, has spent the past two years playing for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior League. He has 12 goals and 64 points in 116 career regular season games. Chisholm, 18, has played for two years with the Ontario Hockey League’s Peterborough Petes. He has registered four goals and 25 points in 88 career games. Giovanni Vallati, 18, also spent the past two years in the OHL. He has eight goals and 47 points in 124 games with the Kitchener Rangers.

Gawanke (136th in 2017), Chisholm (150th in 2018) and Vallati (153rd in 2018) were each selected by the Winnipeg Jets over the past two NHL Entry Drafts. None of the three have yet to sign their entry-level contracts.

In trimming their current roster down to 27 forwards, 17 defensemen and five goaltenders, the Jets will now head out on the road for their second game of the 2018-19 preseason on Thursday in Edmonton. Puck drop from Rogers Place is set for 8:00 P.M. central time, and the game can be viewed live on TSN3. Winnipeg will then return home for Friday’s 7:00 P.M. contest against the visiting Calgary Flames.
