Winterhawks Name Cody Glass Captain

Late Wednesday afternoon it was announced that 19-year-old Winnipeg native Cody Glass will serve the Portland Winterhawks as team captain for the duration of the 2018-19 Western Hockey League season. Jared Freadrich, Jake Gricius, Brendan De Jong, Ryan Hughes and Joachim Blichfeld will round out the leadership group.

The captains were announced just prior to the Winterhawks skating in their first game of the season in Portland’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The team announcement clearly excited the veteran leadership crew, who collected a total of 12 points on night, including two goals and four points from Glass, as well as another five assists from Blichfeld.

Blichfeld and Glass are ranked number one and two, respectively, in WHL scoring through the first three weeks of league play. Although only dressing in six games thus far, Glass has an astonishing three goals and 17 points, while Blichfeld – who has skated in eight games – has eight goals and 22 points on the year.

Glass, the former sixth overall selection in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights, just continues to build upon what he started in the WHL over three-and-a-half years ago. After a 2016-17 season that saw the 6-foot-2, 190-pound centreman net 32 goals and 94 points, the former Winnipeg Hawk and Thrasher put up 37 goals and 102 points in five fewer games.

Glass has been a consistent playoff performer as well, registering nine goals and 25 points in 27 career postseason contests. In 207 regular season WHL games, Glass has 82 goals, 240 points, 86 penalty minutes and a +75 ranking. The Winterhawks next play the Everett Silvertips on Sunday evening, as they continue their three game homestand in Portland.
