The Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League has announced Pembina Valley Hawks’ defenceman Cora Fijala as its Player of the Week for the third week of the season.

Cora Fijala Named MFMHL Player of the Week

Fijala, a product of Manitou, collected five points in two games of weekend action. In her Pembina Valley Hawks’ 8-2 landslide victory over the Interlake Lightning, Fijala contributed on half of her team’s goals, scoring once and adding three assists for a four-point night. She also assisted on Pembina Valley’s only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Eastman the following day.

The third-year grade 11 defenceman is serving in a leadership role within the Hawks’, as she was named one of the team’s alternate captains for the 2018-19 hockey season. Fijala’s success goes further than just the scoresheet, as the team player helped guide the Hawks to a league championship in 2016-17, and a second-place finish in 2017-18.

The 5-foot-8, 160-pound blueliner now has three goals and nine points in six games this season. She had three goals, 16 points and 68 penalty minutes in 2017-18, following a two goal, 10 point first season within the MFMHL.
