Stelio Mattheos has had himself a wonderful start to the 2018-19 Western Hockey League season.

Wheat Kings’ Captain Earns Player of the Month Honours

Coming off of a 43-goal, 90-point campaign for the Brandon Wheat Kings in 2017-18, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound centreman has turned up his game once again. Beginning this season with 16 goals and 28 points in just 17 games, the Carolina Hurricanes’ draft pick has found his way back onto the scoreboard in a big way for the Wheaties.

Serving as Brandon’s team captain has added some responsibility to Mattheos’ daily life on and off the ice, however, he hasn’t skipped a beat production wise, cashing in on October’s Player of the Month award for the Wheat Kings. The former first overall WHL Bantam Draft selection had himself a phenomenal month of October.

Although noted as the Player of the Month for October, the award also includes the one week of regular season September WHL play. In 15 games from late September to the last day of October, Mattheos had 61 shots on net, a plus-10 rating, 14 goals and 25 points – leading the team in both statistical categories.

The former Winnipeg Monarch AAA Bantam and AAA Wild player has had himself three seasons of progressive WHL play, recording approximately 30 additional points from his previous season’s totals in each of his campaigns. With 30 points in 2015-16, 61 in 2016-17 and 90 in 2017-18, Mattheos has quite the daunting task on his hands for 2018-19. But if he keeps up this torrid pace, it is very doable.
