After taking a week to prepare for the incoming Iowa Wild, the Manitoba Moose salvaged two of the five awarded points over the weekend.

Moose Split Weekend Series With Iowa

The Moose put together a 4-3 overtime win on Friday evening, before falling 3-2 to Iowa in a span of less than 24 hours. Eric Comrie collected a win in extra time on a Mason Appleton marker, but then gave up three goals on 28 shots the following afternoon.

Friday’s game couldn’t have been more entertaining for the local fans as Manitoba put up a goal a period, including the overtime winner, just 29 seconds into the extra frame. After Peter Stoykewych put the home team up 1-0 late in the first period, the Moose gave up a goal with 30 seconds to play, ending the first period tied 1-1.

Manitoba then fell behind midway through the second as Luke Kunin scored another even strength marker for the visitors. Tucker Poolman responded just over a minute later, but the Wild got yet another quick response, maintaining a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Six minutes into the third period, Emile Poirier tied the game back up for Manitoba. the 3-3 draw would withstand the test of time in the 20 minute stanza, forcing the game to extra time. Mason Appleton put up his 8th of year less than 30 seconds into the extra five minutes of play to seal the deal for the Moose on Friday.

Saturday’s game – which also served as Hockey Fights Cancer Day – from Bell MTS Place did not go quite as well for the hometown kids. Although heavily outshooting their familiar faced opponent, the Moose just couldn’t get much past Kaapo Kahkonen. Stopping 34 of 36 shots, Kahkonen picked up a 3-2 win, pushing Manitoba’s record down to 9-9-1 through 19 games.

Alexis D’Aoust and Logan Shaw put up goals for the Moose, but Iowa held on to Matt Read, Dmitry Sokolov and Colton Beck strikes, sealing their one-goal victory over Manitoba Saturday afternoon. The Moose now embark on a six-game road trip – making stops in Bakersfield, San Diego and Stockton – and will not be back at Bell MTS Place until December 14th.
