With fellow defencemen Dmitry Kulikov, Joe Morrow and Josh Morrissey all missing periods of time due to injury, Winnipeg’s blueline shaped up rather interestingly over the course of the last week. Sami Niku finally got his shot at NHL game action in 2018-19, as did AHL lifer Cameron Schilling. The Jets then recalled Nelson Nogier for one game to fill in for the injured Morrissey.
Byfuglien and Kulikov will return to Winnipeg’s lineup Friday night, however Morrissey, Morrow and Copp remain out with their current injuries.
With Manitoba also giving up former AHL Rookie of the Year Mason Appleton to the big league club in wake of the Andrew Copp injury, the Moose’s depth was heavily tested over the last two weeks. Defenceman Tucker Poolman and forwards Marko Dano, Nic Kerdiles, JC Lipon and Kristian Reichel all suffered injuries leaving little to none on the side of AHL offence for Manitoba other than the surprising back-to-back hat trick production out of forward Logan Shaw.
