Late Tuesday evening Hockey Manitoba released the names of the 20 players that will travel to Red Deer, AB. for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in February.

Many Notable Names on U-16 Team Manitoba

Included on the list of names is former second overall 2018 WHL Bantam Draft selection, defenceman Carson Lambos, goaltender Tyler Brennan, recent WHL call-up Eric Alarie and the only 2004-born player on the roster Conor Geekie. Coaching the squad that will travel west in less than two months is Garth Mitchell, Brad Purdie and Dan Eliasson.

Although only selecting exactly 12 forwards, six defencemen and two goalies, many possibilities remain for the team in the case of emergency fill-in players as the tournament approaches. Of the 20 players selected, 10 hail from Manitoba’s capital, while the other half come from rural cities/communities outside of Winnipeg.

11 players on the team come from The Rink Hockey Academy (both the Prep and Elite 15s team is represented), while the remainder come from City Midget, Provincial AAA or Bantam AAA (Eastman, Pembina Valley, Yellowhead, Southwest, Sioux Falls, Winnipeg). 16 of the 20 team members have previously been selected in the WHL Bantam Draft.

Conor Geekie (younger brother of the Charlotte Checkers’ Morgan Geekie) is currently the only 2004-born player to crack the squad, while Brandon Wheat Kings’ prospect Cabrel Labossiere is the eldest member of Team Manitoba. Aidan Brook is the younger sibling of Josh Brook, who will be playing with Team Canada at the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship this holiday season in B.C.

The Canada Winter Games begin on Friday, February 13th and run until March 3rd, featuring 19 sports and over 150 different events. 3,600 athletes and 20,000 visitors are expected to participate in the three-week spectacle in Central Alberta. Team Manitoba will face off against the other provinces between February 14th to 23rd in Red Deer.
