Alongside 38 other Canadian Junior A hockey players, Portage’s Reilly Funk and Steinbach’s Kyle Bettens have been named to one of the two teams participating in the CJHL Prospects Game on January 22nd from Pason Centennial Arena in Okotoks, AB.
Having been identified as the two of the top-40 players in the Canadian Junior Hockey League (the governing body of the CCHL, OJHL, LHJAAAQ, MHL, NOJHL, AJHL, BCHL, SJHL and the MJHL) Funk and Bettens will have the opportunity to showcase why they are considered as two of the top-40 CJHL players heading into the 2019 NHL Entry Draft this June.
Funk, 17, is 27 games into his second MJHL season with the Terriers, where he has already put up 14 goals and 35 points for the league’s top dog. Bettens, also 17, has only played 16 MJHL games this season for the Pistons, as he began the year with the USHL’s Fargo Force. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound forward has two goals and 10 points for Steinbach thus far.
As is typically the case, the OJHL will once again dominate Team East’s roster, while the BCHL is represented quite heavily on the roster of Team West. Puck drop on January 22nd is set for 8:30 P.M. central.
On and off-ice testing will occur for the players as a part of the weekend festivities, while a host of scouts from the NHL, CHL, NCAA and CIS will observe the participating players. Manitoba has hosted the CJHL Prospects Game three times, twice in Winkler, and most recently in Dauphin in 2011. Team West has won the last two CJHL Prospects Games.
