Selkirk’s Nate Halvorsen was the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best player this past month.

Halvorsen, 20, put together a rock-solid month of play for the Steelers, collecting 11 goals and 16 points in 11 games for Selkirk, en route to being named the MJHL Player of the Month for January. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound forward had points in 10 of 11 January games, including the continuation of a 17-game point streak, in which he registered 27 points. 

The December Player of the Month runner-up now has a league-leading 14 power play goals and 21 power play points, while sitting tied for fifth in league scoring. In 48 games, Halvorsen has 30 goals and 50 points. 

The MJHL also announced its goaltender, defenceman, rookie and peak performer of the month on Friday. The Terriers’ Ethan Peterson took home the top goaltender award while teammate Sheldin Howard was the the rookie of the month. Virden’s Tristen Cross was named best defenceman in January, while Swan Valley’s Jaden Townsend collected the peak performer honour. 

Peterson went 7-0-0 with a 1.14 goals against average and a .954 save percentage with two shutouts in the month of January. Cross put up four goals and nine points in 10 games, while Howard was a point-per-game player in January. Townsend has been active in the Swan Valley community, helping out a school programs and local restaurants.
