The Jets’ initiative ‘Reading Takes Flight’ was a way for the players of the Winnipeg Jets to help the young children of Winnipeg invest in the continuation of reading, while showing how reading can be fun. Players travelled in pairs to different elementary schools across the city and spent a good portion of Monday morning reading with the kids.
Every school in the city had the opportunity to send an application in to True North, highlighting the five reasons why the Jets should choose to come to their school to read. Players that attended the morning visits read the official Winnipeg Jets storybook ‘Whiteout: A Winnipeg Jets Story’ to the children in the class.
Each of the 11 schools that were selected also received an autographed Winnipeg Jets jersey, while the kindergarten-to-grade six students each had the chance to meet the players and receive an autographed story book. Random prizes were also given out upon each visit.
