Virden’s Josh Belcher Takes MJHL Player of the Week Award

In helping the Oil Caps to a 31-21-8 fifth-place finish and a personal best three goals and seven points in two games to finish the season, 18-year-old forward Josh Belcher collected the MJHL’s weekly First Star award. With the seven points in his final two games, the second-year Virden Oil Capital brought his season totals to 14 goals and 43 points in 56 games.

After being held off the scoreboard in his previous game, the Rapid City product turned up the intensity in his final weekend of regular season play. He picked up a goal and three assists on Saturday, in Virden’s 6-4 victory over Dauphin, before netting another two goals and one assist the following day against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines.

Belcher beat out Winnipeg Blues’ Michael Ladyman and Swan Valley’s Michael Davis for the weekly recognition. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound forward and his Oil Capitals teammates have recently begun their quest for the MJHL championship, beating the Selkirk Steelers 3-2 in triple overtime Saturday evening, before beating up on the Steelers the following night 5-1.
