Winnipeg’s Jett Woo Signs First NHL Contract

On Sunday morning, the Canucks announced the signing of defenceman Jett Woo to a standard three-year, entry-level contract. The deal carriers a cap hit of $892K when playing at the NHL level.

Woo, an 18-year-old product of Winnipeg, was Vancouver’s second round selection (37th overall) in he 2018 NHL Entry Draft this past June at American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX.

The former Winnipeg Wild star has had himself the best statistical season of his Western Hockey League career in 2018-19. The blueliner dressed in 62 games for the Moose Jaw Warriors, putting up more than a point-per-game, finishing the season with 12 goals, 65 points, 70 penalty minutes and a +16 rating.

The 65 points in 62 games was Woo’s best offensive output in the Western League, besting his 22-point total from 2017-18, upping his offensive game, while continuing his dominant, high impact-styled physical presence from Moose Jaw’s right side. The third-year WHL star also finished the season fifth in defenceman scoring, ending the year just 10 points behind fellow Manitoban and teammate Josh Brook.

Woo, whose Warriors take on the Saskatoon Blades in the first round of the WHL Playoffs, is not expected to join Vancouver’s lineup this season, but should get a legitimate shot at cracking the squad come training camp this fall. Eligible to skate with Canada’s World Junior team, Woo will also be looked upon as a mainstay on the Canadian blueline during the coming holiday season.
