Second Annual Cooper Nemeth Hockey Memorial Goes Saturday

The second annual Cooper Nemeth Hockey Memorial is set for Saturday, March 23rd in the Winnipeg neighbourhood of North Kildonan.

The event will once again be held during the daytime hours at Gateway Recreation Centre (1717 Gateway Road), beginning at 11:45 AM with a AA Female Peewee hockey game. 1:30 PM will see a AA Bantam matchup, while male AA Peewee participants will play at 3:15 PM.

In 2018, the first annual Cooper Nemeth Hockey Memorial featured two Minor Peewee games, a 50/50 draw and silent auction prizes in remembrance of Nemeth – a 17-year-old homicide victim. $13,364.00 was raised for Bear Clan Patrol Inc. Organizers of the 2019 running hope to see an increased number of attendees, participants and larger sum of donations brought in. All proceeds will go to the Cooper Nemeth Memorial Player Assistance Fund and to Bear Clan Patrol Inc.

Advanced tickets for Saturday’s event are available to purchase for $5 at Norm’s Skate Shop (situated at the northwest corner of Gateway Blue rink). Children 12 years old and younger will be granted free admission.

Nemeth (1998-2016) was a prominent Grade 12, Midget AA hockey player for the River East Marauders, who went missing after a house party in February of 2016. The Bear Clan Patrol squad amongst thousands of others spent days searching the many neighbourhoods of Winnipeg, until Nemeth’s body was found.

Following an extensive investigation, Nemeth’s death was ruled a murder in a ‘drug deal gone wrong’. His assailant Nicholas Bell-Wright – who was on probation following a previous violent attack – pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in November of 2017, and has since been locked away on an automatic life sentence, with no chance of parole for another 15 years.
