The news was made official on Friday, as the Chiefs announced the team had locked up its 2018 eighth round draft pick on a signed commitment. After two seasons playing bantam hockey for the Southwest Cougars, Lane spent 2018-19 in the MMHL with the Cougars’ midget team, where he put up five goals, 12 points and 67 penalty minutes in 32 games.
The 16-year-old had 27 goals, 59 points and 157 penalty minutes in his two seasons of bantam, including a 22-goal, 42-point and 99-penalty minute year in 2017-18. However, it was Lane’s 2019 postseason that drew the most of the attention he received. Playing in seven playoff games for Southwest, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound forward put up a point-per-game, ending the postseason with a goal and seven points. Lane also dressed for Team Manitoba at the 2019 Winter Games, where he served as an alternate captain.

Spokane finished the year second in the United States Division with a 40-21-7 record. The Chiefs then made easy work of both the Portland Winterhawks and the Everett Silvertips, before losing in five games to eventual WHL runner-up Vancouver Giants. Lane is expected to attend Chiefs’ training camp this summer for the first time since being drafted last May.
