Winnipegger Macek Signs in KHL

This past week it was announced that the former 2010 sixth-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings has signed a one-year professional deal with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League. Despite signing with Kelly McCrimmon’s Vegas Golden Knights last offseason, Macek did not get the chance to dress for the league’s newest team, spending the duration of the 2018-19 season with the Knights’ American Hockey League affiliate, Chicago.

With the Wolves, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward exploded for 26 goals, 60 points, 12 penalty minutes and a +22 rating in just 64 regular season games. He put together five goals and six points in the postseason for Chicago’s run to the Calder Cup Finals. 2018-19 was the first season back in North America for the former Tri-City American and Calgary Hitmen WHL vet.

After finishing in the ‘Dub’ in the 2012-13 season, Macek used his German citizenship and suited up for two different squads in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Germany, over the course of five seasons. Skating with the Iserlohn Roosters and ECH Munchen, Macek produced at approximately 0.72 points-per-games, collecting 94 goals, 183 points and 62 penalty minutes in 255 regular season games.

As a dual citizen, the 27-year-old has spent some significant time representing Germany on the international stage, most notably collecting a silver medal with the Germans in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea, while playing on multiple occasion for Germany at the IIHF World Championship.

Avtomobilist finished the 2018-19 KHL season first in the Kharlamov Division, but went down four-games-to-one in the KHL Conference Semifinal to Salavat Yulaev Ufa.
