After holding off for 10 days, Ferland – a 26-year-old former Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League junior player – finally put pen to paper on a new contract for the 2019-20 National Hockey League season. In Ferland, the Canucks will add some serious toughness, depth scoring, and a player fully capable of playing in a top-six role.
Most ‘insiders’ figured that the former Brandon Wheat King would have a new home by the first of July. Despite not finding his perfect suitor during the opening week of free agency, the UFA chose to accept Vancouver’s four-year deal, carrying an annual average value of $3.5 million. The $14 million deal carries a full no-movement clause in the first two years and a modified NMC in the final two seasons.
Ferland put together 17 goals, 40 points and 58 penalty minutes in 71 games for the ever-successful Carolina Hurricanes in 2018-19. After beginning his NHL career with four seasons in Calgary, the 6-foot-1, 220-pound winger has 59 goals, 129 points and 193 penalty minutes in 321 regular season games.
