This weekend, the MJHL duo announced their official commitment to the University of Regina Cougars for the 2019-20 hockey season. With the recent signings, the MJHL has now sent 15 players from the 2018-19 season to Canada’s U-Sports for the upcoming year.
Both Barnstable and Mickoski spent four seasons playing junior hockey, with Barnstable (Regina, SK.) bouncing between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the British Columbia Hockey League and the MJHL, while Mickoski (Winnipeg, MB.) played the duration of his junior career in province, between the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League and the MJHL.
Barnstable, 21, spent the past two-and-a-half seasons with the Portage Terriers, racking up 17 goals, 138 points and 74 penalty minutes in 165 total games, including 24 goals and 51 points in 46 games last season. Mickoski, 20, has suited up in 142 career MJHL contests, putting together 35 goals, 86 points and 360 penalty minutes.
The two MJHL champions will take their talents to Regina, and look to help a team that struggled in 2018-19, finishing the season well out of the Canada West playoff picture with a 5-25-1 record. The Cougars travel to Winnipeg to take on the University of Manitoba Bisons in a back-to-back weekend set on Friday and Saturday. Puckdrop from the Wayne Fleming Arena is set for 7:00 PM central on Friday, and 1:30 PM on Saturday.
