After taking care of business early by signing its three first round picks from the 2019 draft, the Wheat Kings came to terms with their 52nd overall selection Bennett this past week. The 15-year-old was also drafted by the Winkler Flyers in the annual Manitoba Junior Hockey League Draft this spring.
Bennett spent the past year playing for Rink Hockey Academy Bantam Prep, where he led the team in points with 15 goals and 31 points in 29 regular season games. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound forward was also just two goals back of the team lead (Carter Anderson, 17). Prior to joining the Bantam Prep squad, the big winger produced at over a point-per-game rate with the AAA Winnipeg Monarchs, scoring 24 goals and 43 points in 37 games.
The Wheat Kings will look to utilize Bennett’s size and offensive abilities in the near future, but for now, the Winnipeg product will enjoy the 2019-20 season with the Rink Hockey Academy Prep team, his second in the CSSHL. Brandon now has 17 forwards, seven defencemen and three goaltenders remaining in camp prior to Friday’s home opener against the Winnipeg ICE.
