New for the 2019-20 season, the Manitoba Junior Hockey League is naming three stars of the week for every week of the season.
On Monday the MJHL’s three stars from the week of October 14-20 were announced. 2002-born Caiden Gault of the Selkirk Steelers, 1999-born Nick Doyle of the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and fellow 1999-born Matt Lenz of the Steinbach Pistons were named as the three recipients.
Gault, a 17-year-old forward originally from Oakbank, put up three goals and six points in three games for the Steelers last week. Although he played in three games, Gault did all of his damage in two contests, picking up two goals and one assist on Wednesday in Neepawa, before adding another goal and two assists on Friday when Selkirk hosted those same Natives. Gault currently has seven goals, 12 points and 10 penalty minutes in 11 games for Selkirk this season.
Doyle, 20, of Winnipeg has had himself a great start to the 2019-20 season on defence for the Wolverines. His three goals and 11 points ranks him third in league defensive scoring. Doyle scored in three-straight contests for Wayway last week, tallying a goal and three assists on Wednesday, before finding the twine again on Friday and Saturday.
Lenz, a 20-year-old goaltending product of Calgary, AB., suited up for two games this past week, collecting two wins, while allowing just four goals on 54 total shots in the process. Lenz’s 8-1-1 record leads the MJHL, while his 2.26 goals against average is third, and his .917 save percentage ranks fifth.
