Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff broke the news via a media scrum in San Jose, prior to Winnipeg’s game against the Sharks Friday evening in California. Heinola – Winnipeg’s first round selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft – cracked the Jets squad for opening night and stuck with the team through the month of October.
With injuries to defencemen Anthony Bitetto, Nathan Beaulieu, Tucker Poolman and Sami Niku, Heinola continued to battle for a place in Winnipeg’s lineup. Despite sitting out as a healthy scratch on multiple occasions, he remained with the team as opposed to being sent down to the American Hockey League.
At 18 years old, Heinola has one goal, five points, four penalty minutes and a plus 3 rating through eight games of the 2019-20 NHL season. He has just one game left of eligibility before the first year of his NHL entry level deal is made official. Heinola will join Niku with the Moose for the foreseeable future.
