The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg ICE handed the visiting Swift Current Broncos a very ‘friendly Manitoban’ welcoming, by way of 7-3 and 4-2 losses this week.
After the Wheaties and ICE went at it twice last weekend exchanging victories, the teams took turns beating the travelling Broncos on back-to-back nights in Manitoba’s two largest cities.
First, after falling behind 3-1 through 40 minutes of play Tuesday, Brandon exploded for a six-goal third period, walking away with a 7-3, come-from-behind win over Swift Current. The Wheat Kings collected goals from Duncan Pierce (2), Lynden McCallum (2), Ty Thorpe (2) and Cole Reinhardt. Netminder Jiri Patera turned aside 24 of 27 shots for the victory.
Swift Current then travelled to Winnipeg for a Wednesday evening battle with the ICE. Winnipeg scored both the first and last goals of the game, en route to doubling up their opponents 4-2. Jakin Smallwood, Jackson Leppard, Peyton Krebs and Isaac Johnson found the twine for the ICE, while Jesse Makaj stopped 14 of 16 shots to earn the win.
Brandon improved its record to 13-15-1 on the season and will next do battle with the Kamloops Blazers on Friday from Westman Place. Winnipeg is now 15-11-1 and will continue its homestand Friday as the Regina Pats travel to Manitoba for a 7:30 PM showdown at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
