Four ‘Manitobans’ Crack Canadian Youth Olympic Squad

Team Canada has named its 17-player roster representing the nation overseas for the 2020 Olympic Youth Winter Games. Nine forwards, six defencemen and two goaltenders were named to the squad. Four of which have ties to the Manitoba hockey scene.

Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie (Strathclair) – both draft selections of the Winnipeg ICE – along with Brandon Wheat Kings’ draft pick Nate Danielson will play as forwards for Canada, while¬†Denton Mateychuk (Dominion City) will suit up as a defenceman in the late-January spectacle.

Canada will compete in a three-team Pool B consisting of Denmark and Russia, while the other three participating teams will be in Pool A; United States, Finland and Switzerland. All games will be played at the Lausanne Arena in Switzerland.

Tournament play begins on Saturday, January 18, as Canada takes on Russia at 7:00 AM central, before battling Denmark the following day, also at 7:00 AM. Canada will get Monday off to prepare for their hopeful participation in one of the Semifinal matches Tuesday. The Gold and Bronze Medal games will be played on Wednesday, January 22 at 5:00 and 8:00 AM, respectively.
