Once again, a member of the Brandon Wheat Kings has earned a place within the Western Hockey League’s weekly award winners. On Monday it was announced that goaltender Jiri Patera was named WHL Goaltender of the Week and to the CHL Team of the Week spanning January 13 through 19.
For Patera, 20, who is in his second season with the Wheat Kings, it was his second recognition in the past three weeks of action, after taking home the same award on January 5. The Wheat Kings have not lost a game in 2020 and are currently in the midst of a nine-game winning streak – thanks in large part to the play of their goaltender, Patera.
The Prahna, CZE. native put together an excellent week of play, going a perfect 2-0-0 with 51 saves on 52 shots for a .981 save percentage in two games. After shutting out the Prince George Cougars 4-0 Wednesday, Patera allowed just one goal on 31 shots against in a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday.
Through 21 games this season, Patera has a 15-7-0-2 record to go along with four shutouts, a 2.38 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. His save percentage is fourth in the league, while his four shutouts are second-best. The sixth round selection of Kelly McCrimmon’s Vegas Golden Knights will return to action Friday night at home against the Victoria Royals.
