MJHL Announces Auto-Protection of 17 Players

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League held its period of auto protection, where its 11-member clubs made the decision to either auto-protect one or two players or earn one or two additional selections for the ate stages of the 2020 MJHL Draft.

In all, 17 players within the catchment areas were listed by the 11 teams, making them no longer eligible for Sunday’s 9:00 AM virtual selection period. Being held online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the draft will see six rounds of 11 picks happen over the internet, before the remaining seventh and eighth compensatory rounds occur for those teams choosing to bypass auto-protection.

10 forwards, six defencemen and one goaltender were selected, each coming from the respective ‘home zone’ of its selecting MJHL team. These newly auto-protected players were born in 2005.

“The auto-protect selections are an important process for our clubs leading up to the Draft every season that can be challenging but very rewarding towards their future success,” said MJHL Director of Operations, Kevin Saurette in a league-issued press release. “Many players who are protected during this process each season go on to become solid pillars of each club and stand out players in the MJHL.”
