Four Manitobans, Krebs, Duke to Participate in Golden Knights Training Camp

The Vegas Golden Knights very well may up and move to Manitoba. After all, in its short, three-year existence, the team has had eight players from the province lace up for general manager Kelly McCrimmon’s squad. Other than the current rostered members, Calvin Pickard, Cody Eakin and Brendan Leipsic have also taken reps with the boys from Sin City.

This past weekend, the Golden Knights announced the players that would be participating in Phase III training camp in Vegas. Amongst the 33 names (18 forwards, 12 defencemen and three goaltenders) were four Manitobans and two other players with strong ties to the province. Not included in the 30 skaters from Manitoba is Cody Glass, who continues to rehab following a nagging right knee injury, for which he had surgery on March 7.

Manitobans invited to the Golden Knights’ training camp include forwards Mark Stone (Winnipeg), Ryan Reaves (Winnipeg) and Keegan Kolesar (Winnipeg, as well as defenceman Zach Whitecloud (Dakota Sioux Nation). Former Brandon Wheat King Reid Duke as well as current Winnipeg ICE team captain Peyton Krebs have also been asked to come down to Vegas.

“One of the things we talked about before we broke in March was being a team that gets competitive advantage through the pause by taking care of ourselves and doing the right things. I’m really happy with the way the players have taken care of this,” said GM Kelly McCrimmon in a team-issued press release. “This is an opportunity to be in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It’s a sacrifice worth making. The decision making and leadership in this process has been noteworthy and appreciated.”

Interestingly, forwards Brandon Pirri, Valentin Zykov and Lucas Elvenes were left off the participation list, while lesser experienced players received invites in their respective places. In finishing within the Western Conference’s top-four seeds, the Golden Knights will bypass the Qualifying Round and participate in a three-game round robin tournament with the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars. Vegas will take on Dallas on August 3, St. Louis on August 6 and Colorado on August 8.
