The Winnipeg Jets have always known the opponent of their Qualifying Round best-of-five series matchup – hint, it rhymes with Blackberry Plains – but the game dates and start times were kept from the public.
Last week, the NHL announced the dates of each of the 52 games, both in the Qualifying Round and the Round Robin Placement Tournament. On Tuesday, game times for a number of the play-in series matchups were announced – 22 to be exact. Within those 22 timeslots were three games featuring the Jets and Calgary Flames.
In addition to revealing what time of day each contest will be played, the league also made public the exhibition schedule, which sees each participating team – of the 24 invited into the bubble – play one tune-up game against a somewhat region foe between Tuesday, July 28 and Thursday, July 30. The Toronto Maple Leafs will take on the Montreal Canadiens, the Edmonton Oilers will play the Flames, while the Jets will battle the Vancouver Canucks.
With both the Scotiabank Arena (11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, 7:00 PM) and Rogers Place (2:30 PM, 6:30 PM, 9:30 PM) playing host to as many as three games per day beginning on August 1, a very jam-packed schedule has been created, however with injuries, overtime and other broadcasting or facility delays, the proposed times are subject to change. Regular season overtime rules (five minute sudden death, three-player shootout) will be used during the Qualifying Round and Round Robin Tournament, while playoff overtime rules (continuous overtime) will be used from Round 1 through to the Stanley Cup Final.
