The Manitoba Women’s Junior Hockey League will play a 2020-21 season. Despite shaping up slightly different than past years, the upcoming season will be played, and played out in its entirety. As one of the only leagues within the province of Manitoba to ‘complete’ the 2019-20 season, the MWJHL was able to award a champion, although in a very unorthodox way.
With the regularly scheduled best-of-five championship series between the Western Predators and the Polar Ice knotted up at 1-1, the league was given the directive midway through Game 3 on March 12 that it would be the final game of the season, as Hockey Canada had just announced the cancellation of all games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the Predators up 1-0 through two periods, they added another goal in the third period, taking a 2-0 victory and 2-1 best-of-five/three championship series win.
Fast forward five months and plans are officially in place for a brand new season, beginning with two skates in early September, and tryouts running from the 12th-14th at Bell MTS Iceplex. In replacing the typical ‘MWJHL Prospect Camp’ and ‘Preseason Practice Skates’, the two ice times booked for September 1 and 3 (also at the Iceplex) are for players hoping to play within the MWJHL during the 2020-21 season.
The cost for the two practice skates is $40 and is payable in advance to the MWJHL via E-Transfer (LMBenson@mymts.net). Players who had previously registered for the annual Prospect Camp remain on the practice skate signup list. Players wanting to participate in the 2020-21 season are required to participate. Players from the 2019-20 MWJHL season may sign up for the practice skates if space allows. Players must pay the full $40 even if only able to attend just one skate.
The 2020-21 season is available to females born from 2000-2003. Registration is to be completed on the MWJHL website. Tryouts are scheduled for September 12, 13 and 14 at the Iceplex. Following registration, information will be sent out via mail regarding payment/tryout times.
