The Winnipeg Avros have helped another player to a U-Sports career. This past week, the team announced that defender Madisyn Smith agreed to terms on a standard student-athlete contract with the Trinity Western University Spartans for the 2021-22 U-Sports season.
Smith, 17, has spent the past two seasons on the Avros’ blueline, where she has averaged 0.4 points-per-game as a defenceman throughout the regular season, while also contributing to the offence in the postseason.
Suiting up in 70 total games in 2018-19, the East St. Paul product scored twice while adding 14 assists and 50 penalty minutes. In 39 regular season league games, Smith had two goals, 10 points and 24 penalty minutes. This past year, she put up six goals, 24 points and 70 penalty minutes in 55 total games, with four goals, 15 points and 30 penalty minutes coming in her 32 games of regular season action. Smith also has a goal, four points and six penalty minutes in 18 career playoff matchups.
Smith will travel west to Trinity Western University in Langley, BC, following the coming 2020-21 season, where she will join the Spartans and play out of the Canada West Conference of U-Sports. The 2019-20 MFHL co-champion (COVID-19) has skated with Hockey Manitoba’s U-16 and U-18 Program of Excellence camps in past years, and has been named as an alternate captain for the coming year with the Avros.
