On Saturday, November 21, the Manitoba Female U-18 AAA Hockey League announced that Eastman Selects forward Maddy Desrosiers has made a formal commitment to the University of Western Ontario, where she will attend school in 2021-22, while playing hockey for the Mustangs, based out of U-Sports’ Ontario University Athletics Conference.
The captain of the Selects is currently in her Grade 12 year and third within the MFHL for Eastman. Named as the team’s leader for the 2020-21 season, Desrosiers already has four assists in six games this year, following an impressive 2019-20 campaign that saw the Grande Pointe product collect 23 goals and 44 points in 33 regular season games for Eastman. In 70 total regular season MFHL games the past three years, Desrosiers has 32 goals and 67 combined points.
2019-20 saw the speedy forward finish second in points across the league, coming up just six points shy of teammate Kylie Lesuk’s league lead. Her 10 penalty minute were also by far the fewest amongst the top-three point leaders. The 5-foot-2, 135-pound university commit has seen a difficult start to the six-game 2020-21 season, with her Selects managing just one win and 14 goals-for on the season, with the majority of the goals coming in Eastman’s 8-2 victory over Interlake. She will look to help turn things around following the COVID-19 pause.
Desrosiers has had a host of hockey experience over the past number of years, including a MFHL First Team All-Star nod last year, while also suiting up for Team Manitoba at the 2019 Hockey Canada Nationals. On top of that, she was named to Manitoba’s roster for the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship in Yukon in May of 2019. Previously, Desrosiers served as captain of the U-16 Team Manitoba.
Desrosiers will join a strong Mustangs team that went 12-10-2 in 2019-20, following a 2018-19 campaign that saw Western go 14-5-5 and lose in the conference semifinals. The Mustangs narrowly missed out on the postseason last spring, finishing one win behind the University of Guelph for the final playoff spot.
“Madelaine Desrosiers is known for her work ethic, relentless pressure on the puck and 200′ game which earned her the Captain’s letter with this year’s Selects team,” the MFHL wrote in a statement. “We want to congratulate Madelaine on her outstanding accomplishments to date during her U-18 ‘AAA’ career and wish her all the best with her future academic and hockey endeavours while at Western University.”
