Former Bombers Smith, Empey Sign ECHL Deals

Two past members of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Flin Flon Bombers have signed to play in the ECHL for the coming 2020-21 season. Former Bombers captain Tyson Empey has agreed to terms with the Rapid City Rush, while former Michigan Tech captain Alex Smith will join the Florida Everblades. The 2020-21 ECHL season is set to get underway on Friday, December 11.

Empey, a six-foot-2, 190-pound forward played four seasons with Flin Flon from 2012-16, where he amassed 34 goals and 76 points in 184 total games. The Swift Current, SK. native then moved south to the State University of New York, where he suited up in 92 games, scoring 54 goals and 103 points in NCAA Division III action.

Smith, a six-foot, 188-pound forward has spent the past four years in the NCAA, where he put up 26 goals and 79 points in 155 career games with the Huskies.¬†Before joining Michigan Tech, the Edmonton, AB. product played two years with Flin Flon, collecting 19 goals and 47 points in 54 games in 2014-15, before earning 32 goals and 84 points in 56 games with the Bombers in 2015-16, taking home the SJHL’s Player of the Year award in the process.

Both Empey and Smith are 25 years old, and played together with the Bombers in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. 2015-16 marked the first of back-to-back finals losses for Flin Flon, where Empey, Smith and the Bombers fell just short to fellow Sherwood Division and league champion Melfort Mustangs.
