Hockey Manitoba is encouraging all to consider applying for one of its many annual scholarships awarded to graduating players who are pursuing further education. With an application deadline of this Thursday, April 1, the time to act is now.
“The game of hockey provides many teachable moments and some equally valuable life lessons,” a Hockey Manitoba statement reads. “In addition to the on-ice experiences and enjoyment, Hockey Manitoba also recognizes the importance of a strong educational foundation, and each year awards twenty (20) post secondary scholarships to graduating student member athletes.”
Those scholarships range in value from $750 to $1,500, with over $16,000 being presented to high school aged seniors looking to pursue post-secondary. One scholarship is solely awarded to a female athlete, while one provides two separate winners. All others will have a winner selected through a vetting process by the The Hockey Manitoba Awards & Scholarships Committee.
Successful applicants will see equal weight between their hockey involvement (playing, coaching, officiating, community-building) and academic performance. Winners will be notified in early May, with each recipient receiving recognition at their respective school’s year-end award ceremony. Cheques will be mailed following a verification process of official post-secondary tuition payment.
To be considered, applicants must be:
- A graduating high school student
- Scheduled to attend a post-secondary institution in Canada within two years of graduating high school
- A Hockey Manitoba member (player, coach, official)
- A Manitoba resident or a Hockey Manitoba member living in a broader community
- Meet the admission standards of the University or Community College.
- Enrolled full-time and receiving full-time credits at a Canadian University or College.
- Not be currently serving as a ‘Junior’ hockey player.
