Seven ‘Locals’ to Compete for Spots on Canadian National Junior Team

When the Canadian National Junior Team Summer Development Camp opens from Calgary next Wednesday, those taking in the action will recognize a number of names and faces this time around.

Beginning with the local content, three participants hail from the province of Manitoba, while one member of the Winnipeg Jets will also attend camp. The Western Hockey League’s Manitoba-based teams, the Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg ICE, will also each have two roster players participating. This brings the number of notable attendees to a total of seven.

Of the 51 players invited to attend the eight-day camp, seven have ties to the province of Manitoba. Not bad, considering recent numbers – or the lack there of – in past years/tournaments. There will be 30 forwards, 16 defencemen and five goaltenders at camp.

Manitobans invited to participate include defencemen Carson Lambos (Winnipeg) and Daemon Hunt (Brandon), as well as forward Seth Jarvis (Winnipeg). The lone member of the Winnipeg Jets in attendance will Cole Perfetti (2020 first round pick). The Brandon Wheat Kings will send Ridly Greig (2020 first round pick of the Ottawa Senators) and Vincent Iorio (2021 NHL Draft eligible). Representing the Winnipeg ICE will be Carson Lambos (2021 NHL Draft eligible) and Connor McClennon (2020 sixth round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers).

The camp will run from July 28 to August 4 from the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex on the Tsuut’ina Nation near Calgary. It will serve as an opportunity for those invited to participate in a number of off/on-ice training, practices and intrasquad matchups. The National Junior Team camp participants will face off against the National Men’s Under-18 Team twice from August 2-4.

Players at the National Junior Team Summer Development Camp are competing for spots on the Canadian team set to face off in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship that is set to run from December 26 to January 5 from Edmonton and Red Deer.
