The Swift Current Broncos have announced the signings of two players to standard Western Hockey League player agreements in advance of the 2021-22 WHL season.
Alongside draft pick Connor Gabriel of Saskatoon, the team also extended a contract to Steinbach’s own Luke Mistelbacher. The 15-year-old joined the Broncos’ 50-man protected list in 2020 following his play within Manitoba’s U-15 AAA league.
Following a 2018-19 U-14 campaign with the Eastman Selects that saw the 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward put up 11 goals and 16 points in 30 games, Mistelbacher exploded for 33 goals and 55 points in just 34 games the following season – his first in U-15. A clean player, he only collected eight minutes in penalties after sitting for just six minutes the year prior.
With the COVID-19 global pandemic cutting the 2020-21 minor hockey season short, Mistelbacher only managed to appear in five games this past year for the Eastman Selects in the provincial U-18 AAA league. However, he maintained his one goal-per-game rate from the past season by scoring five times and adding four assists for nine points in those five contests.
Swift Current begins its preseason action with a Friday/Saturday home-and-home doubleheader with the Moose Jaw Warriors, before battling Medicine Hat the following weekend. The Broncos kick off the 2021-22 WHL regular season on Friday, October 1 at home against the Tigers.
