Moustache No More: Auston Matthews to Shave Trademark Look

Toronto Maple Leafs’ star forward Auston Matthews will soon be sporting a new look. In an effort to raise funds for MOvember – an annual campaign that sees men (and potentially women) grow out the hair over their upper lip – Matthews gave fans an opportunity to control his fate in terms of his look, facial hair-wise.

Announced prior to the start of the month, Matthews once again put his trademark moustached look on the line. Should fans donate $134,000 or more to his personal MOvember page, he made it clear that he would shave off his every-day look. This weekend, Matthews reached his goal, to which he now has raised $138,743.00 towards the MOvember campaign.

Since beginning his work with MOvember, Matthews has collected a total of $205,407.00 in funding for men’s health. Working in support of¬†prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health awareness, MOvember has been an annual tradition since 2003. Gaining popularity over the years, over six million participants have officially signed up through the MOvember website to date.

Entering the NHL in 2016, Matthews sported a clean shaven look while under the strict tutelage of general manager Lou Lamoriello through 2018. But while away on vacation in his native Mexico in 2019, Matthews opted to skip the upper lip while shaving to “blend in” with his heritage. The look has stuck and the trademark moustache has been with the goal-scorer ever since.

Although growing in his jawline and parts of his cheeks during various playoff runs, the moustache has remained a fixture in Matthews’ day-to-day appearances. But thanks to various social media posts, commercials, signed stick and photo giveaways, and custom sticks and skates through CCM, the donations poured in, with Matthews hitting his goal of $134K one week early.

The Leafs next play late Wednesday evening in Los Angeles, as the team continues its four-game road trip, with three upcoming stops on the west coast. If Matthews plans to shave his lip prior to the end of November remains up in the air. The 24-year-old has also not indicated how long the moustache would remain off his lip.
