Jets’ Young Stars Shine Brightly in Tournament Finale

The prospect squad representing the Winnipeg Jets at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, British Columbia this past week finally found a victory.

The lone win for the Jets in their three-game round robin came in the final of three contests. Facing off in the annual pre-season tune-up for the first time in four years, young draft picks and undrafted free agents worked to make their respective cases for consideration on the Jets’ and American Hockey League affiliate Manitoba Moose roster from the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Taking on prospects from the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, the Jets only managed one victory, but did do in their final game on Monday afternoon.

Recent first round selections Cole Perfetti, Chaz Lucius and Brad Lambert each scored for Winnipeg, which ended up taking the game 5-3 on an empty-netter. Goaltender Dominic DiVincentiis made 44 stops in goal and earned the win. Tyler Boland and Greg Meireles also found the twine for the victors.

For the tournament, Lambert had two goals and four points, while both Perfetti and Lucius each had a goal and an assist.

After opening the Young Stars Classic with a narrow 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Friday night, the Jets fell 4-1 to Vancouver on Sunday.

Both losses brought a number of learning experiences for the young prospects, to which the youngsters finally prevailed against the Flames on Monday. Those prevailing to training camp will continue to put their skills on display for the Jets and Moose brass as camps open across the league this week. Winnipeg will begin its preseason on September 25 in Edmonton.
