Hockey Manitoba Announces Male and Female Winter Games Rosters

Hockey Manitoba has announced the two teams it will bring to the Canada Winter Games held from February 18 to March 5 in Prince Edward Island. Final rosters have been revealed for the Female U-18 Team Manitoba and the Male U-16 Team Manitoba set to compete later this winter.

Beginning with the Program of Excellence Top-68 Camp in Winnipeg back in June, 40 female U-18 hopefuls then were evaluated at the POE Top-40 Camp in late-July. That crew was whittled down to 26 players, who participated in the POE Summer Development Camp in late-August. An exhibition series from September 23-25 in Saskatoon helped coaching staff determined the final 20 member roster.

On the U-16 male side of things, the process started even earlier, as the Spring Selection Camp was held in Niverville back in April. 40 players were then invited to the Portage la Prairie POE Top-40 Camp in early-May. The Winnipeg Summer Camp saw four days of activities from Seven Oaks Arena in mid-July, before an exhibition  game with the Winnipeg Wild U-18 AAA team in early-October prior to roster finalization.

Winnipeg Avros AAA program head coach Ashley van Aggelen will serve as the U-18 Female Team Manitoba head coach, while Winnipeg ICE assistant coach Taras McEwen will assume the duties of the U-16 Male Team Manitoba.

“We’re very proud of our team. We really like the speed and skill we have in our line-up and our goaltending is very strong so we’re really excited about this group heading into the Canada Games,” McEwan said. “It’s an honour to represent your province and this will truly be a unique experience for our players and staff so we can’t wait to get there and compete for a gold medal.”

McEwen’s club will first travel to play two exhibition games against the U016 Team Saskatchewan in late-December, before reporting to Prince Edward Island for the male Canada Winter Games which will run from February 18 to 26, 2023. van Aggelen’s female team will head to Prince Edward Island for the female Canada Winter Games from February 26 to March 5.

“Throughout this process we have been thrilled with the talent level that we have with our 2006-2005 female athletes,” van Aggelen said. “We have a great group with a number of returning players, a mobile defence group and some elite offensive talent. Most importantly, it is a great group of kids that have been a pleasure to coach. Our coaching staff are excited to see what this group can do at the national level and look forward to heading to PEI in February.”
