The Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Education Centre Inc. (MICEC) celebrated its 33rd Annual Indigenous Minor Hockey Tournament in Winnipeg from March 24-26 at the ScotiaBank Hockey for all Centre.
The three-day event featured roughly 5,000 players and supporters from communities across Manitoba in an effort to unite under the umbrella of hockey, while also promoting awareness and understanding of Indigenous culture. Youth are encouraged to test their skills and make new friends in camaraderie and healthy competition in the comfortable confines of the four ice surface Hockey for all Centre.
The Hockey Manitoba sanctioned tournament featured U-7,U-9, U-11, U-13, U-15 and U-18 age categories, to which 55+ teams from all over Manitoba made up the five-on-five weekend schedule. With the majority of those in attendance just coming to take in the fun and entertainment, roughly 1,000 participants serve as the players, coaches and team support members.
Guests were charged daily admission upon entrance, giving them access to any of the games for the duration of the day. Regular priced entrance tickets went for $15, while youth ($10), Elders ($5) and children ($5), paid special discounted rates.
Additionally, the event featured magicians, square dancing, face painters and a number of incredible prizes. Although most have already been awarded, some of the silent auction prize draws have yet to be claimed.
Included in the list of prizes was a 50 inch television, a smoker, a Mark Scheifele jersey, a bike, AirPods, a Nintendo Switch and a WestJet round trip for two amongst other winnings.
