Mark Scheifele has been a mainstay of the Jets for more than a decade. If anyone personifies the Jets 2.0, it’s their top centreman. Game On Magazine sits down with Scheifele to talk about his childhood Christmases, how his faith keeps him steady and why he’s “all in” with new head coach Rick Bowness.

The Winnipeg Jets are revving up for a solid run for the playoffs! Andrew Copp is having his best season ever in his seven years with the team, and Pierre-Luc Dubois is back at the top of his game with renewed power and confidence! Meanwhile, Kyle Connor got the NHL All-Star nod, to no one’s surprise, given his superb talents on the ice.

There are definitely a lot of playoff hopes riding on Brenden Dillon. We’re calling the Jets’ acquisition of the former Washington Capitals defenceman possibly one of the best deals Kevin Cheveldayoff has ever made. Dillon’s the veteran on the Jets’ blue line and he’s got proud memories of his 2018 run to the Stanley Cup. Dillon’s revved up and ready to lead the charge to Lord Stanley in the next playoffs!

Pierre-Luc Dubois is the Jets’ new jack of all trades. PLD followed his dad’s advice to learn to play all three forward positions because then it would be easy for the coach to put him in the lineup. Dubois modestly describes himself as a forward, a two-way centre who plays well defensively and offensively and who blocks shots, hits, scores and passes. He wants “to be the guy that does everything out there” and with that kind of versatility, he’ll be key to making the Jets’ playoff run a long and exciting one.

What better way to start a new season — we hope — than with a major NHL trophy in hand? With Connor Hellebuyck winning the Vezina Trophy, emblematic of the best goaltender in the game, the Jets have a terrific advantage heading into the season — whenever it starts. Stanley Cup playoffs, anybody? OK, maybe it’s too early for that kind of prediction, but any team that the Jets play will face one fierce puck stopper protecting the goal.

COVID-19 brought the season to a sudden end, but the spirit of the game will live on in all the players’ hearts until they can lace up their skates and get back on the ice again. Meanwhile, mega-manufacturer Bauer has shown its own heart, too. The company has switched from hockey gear to making medical face masks to keep health-care workers safe on the front lines.

It’s business as usual – or is it? – during the regular season. Manitoban Dylan McIlrath proudly dons his Red Wings jersey every day, and Jack Roslovic keeps his own dream alive as he suits up for the Jets, while young immigrant families in Winnipeg are learning the rudiments of the game under a new Hockey Manitoba program.

There’s nothing quite like the anticipation at the start of a new hockey season. New coaches have joined the rosters, along with some very talented rookies, and playerswho’ve been traded are set to battle their old teams on the ice. The excitement around that first face-off of that first game of the season is electric.
